Wates construction are involved with the Green Schools Project. On Monday, we went to a ‘Wates’ construction site where they were building a 5 story block of apartments. We were led through the many jobs that are in the construction sector, such as a lawyer that advises on the building and planning regulations, an environmental engineer who helps make the building environmentally sustainable, an architect , a construction supervisor and an electrician.
We also had to wear and learn about five pieces of essential equipment when we were having the tour around: a hat(to protect our head), gloves(to protect our hands), boots(to protect our feet from any heavy objects falling on them), goggles(to protect our eyes from dust that might be in the air after someone cuts wood) and a high visible vest (so that people can see us).
At the end of the trip we went back to school and tried building the tallest structure we could out of marshmallows and spaghetti but we had a budget of £250. Each spaghetti was £10 and each marshmallow was £20. I feel like I have learnt about new jobs that I would have never associated with construction, for example, being a lawyer, advising on the building and planning regulations and the activity at the end gave me a realistic idea of the reality of building for a client and working within a budget.
