Why Choose Child Development?
This Child Development is a course designed for 14-16 year-olds. It provides an introduction to Child Development with both practical and theoretical elements. Child Development is suitable for you if you would like to work with children and prepare for parenthood.
Students will be working with professionals in the childcare and child health sector and will offer opportunities to visit providers of such facilities e.g. local nurseries and childminders. Students could also combine their work experience with learning and applying their knowledge and should ideally do their work experience in a Nursery or similar setting.
This course can give a pathway to post 16 qualifications in Child Care, Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology, and Biology.
Course Content
UNIT 1: HEALTH AND WELLBEING FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT.
Externally examined by written paper which accounts for 40% of the total marks.
Topics covered include: Reproduction & responsibilities of parenthood, antenatal care & preparation for birth, postnatal care & conditions for development, child illness and child safety.
UNIT 2: UNDERSTAND THE EQUIPMENT AND NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN FROM 0-5 YEARS.
Internally assessed tasks (externally moderated) 30% of total marks.
Topics covered include: Choosing equipment, nutritional guidelines and feeding solutions for babies and children up to five years.
UNIT 3: UNDERSTAND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CHILD FROM 0-5 YEARS.
Internally assessed tasks (externally moderated) 30% of total marks.
Topics covered include: Physical, intellectual and social development, learning through play, planning age-appropriate activities and evaluating planned activities for each area of development.

60% – Portfolio work (Two controlled assessment tasks)
40% – Written examination
