ESU Performing Shakespeare Competition
Last half term, several students from key stage three took part in an internal heat of the English Speaking Union’s ‘Performing Shakespeare’ competition. Over several weeks, they rehearsed a Shakespearean monologue or duologue and then performed for our judges Ms Pugh, Ms Burton and Mr Vadwhana. Several sixth form volunteers also gave up their time to direct the students. It was a wonderful example of our school community coming together through the creative arts.
It was a privilege to be able to see these performances. The judges were blown away! Ms Burton said that our students speaking of verse was better than some of the recent professional productions she’d seen and Ms Pugh said it was the highlight of her term!
Congratulations to all performers for their hard work: Sarah B (year 7), Gabriella R (year 7), Evie V (year 9), Millie M (year 9), Bea L (year 9), Chloe D (year 7), Annabel G (year 7), Sam G (year 7), Tabitha B (year 7), Lila M (year 8) and Evie F (year 8), Zana G (year 8), Daisy W (year 8), Savannah G (year 8), Lauren C (year 8).
Many thanks to our sixth form directors Sadie W, Dillichi D, Zipporah F, Bram B, Raf G, Indigo W, Sterrett H, Isabella L, Primavera J. They were so supportive of the performers and able to help them to really experiment with their performances.
This year there have been many entrants to the competition and so we are only allowed to submit one entry to the regional heat. We are delighted to announce that Evie V and Millie M will be going forward to represent St Marylebone in a regional heat on Tues 3rd May. They will be performing Emilia and Desdemona’s duologue, Act 4 scene 3, from ‘Othello.’ Bram and Sadie are continuing to rehearse with them!
Good luck Evie and Millie!
