Mr Yatish and Debating Club
Every Thursday for the past year debating society has been in session (online at first and now in person). Each week, students go head to head debating a variety of topics, listening and asking questions and learning a range of useful skills.
Below are some comments from the team about their first competition:
Last weekend we had an amazing opportunity and a group of us were entered into our first competition of the year led by St Paul’s Girls’ School.
The first round proved to be the toughest which could be due to a mix of nerves (so many nerves!!) and a difficult motion, which was “non-violent offenders should not be put in prison”. Although it was a big challenge many of the teams came up with some brilliant and intellectual points that helped them in their speeches.
Although this was only our first competition of the year, we all managed to pull through and had a great time. No matter how challenging we found it, we all really appreciated the opportunity, developed many new skills such as communication, time management and speaking with confidence. We hope to do more competitive debating in the future!
Thanks to Mr V and Ms Coutts for planning this opportunity and supporting us. Come to Debating club if you want to take part in the future, we would both really recommend it as it’s a blast! It’s really helped boost our confidence and have improved our public speaking skills!. See you there!
