A group of Year 8N students recently attended The Unloc Changemaker Moments mentoring event held at Verzion UK headquarters in Holborn. Students had the opportunity to meet with a range of business leaders through a speed networking session. They also heard from a panel of inspirational speakers of how they got to their current positions with advice on how to pursue “your dream career”. Pupils had a chance to see and use some of the latest technology that will be coming to the retail industry in the near future.
What actually happened:
When we got off the train we went to this big, fancy building. It’s called the London Hub. The nine people from Marylebone went into a conference room, and another group of girls went into the one next to us. We were told what the event was about and then joined the other group in another room. We got into partners and did handshake practices. After this we sat and learnt about listening skills (eye contact, no fidgeting, etc.). This was all to meet the mentors from different companies and careers who were to teach us all about what they did, how they got there and their certain field of work. People from large companies came, such as Asos, Burberry and the Royal Mail. We did mock interviews with our peers and then had a moment to explore a tech room, which had a virtual reality headset and a Tesco’s walk-in photo booth. It was really fun to look around and talk to at least five mentors from different careers each.
I found out many things about the career mentors there, such as their previous experience at work and how it helped them to get where they are now. One of them told me to never say no to an opportunity, and another said ‘do what you love’. Hard work and perseverance also have to be put into achieving your career goals. I really enjoyed when we swapped around and the mentors got to ask us questions, because I got to tell them what I wanted to do when I am older and then in turn get advice about it. I also liked when we got to explore the tech room because there were fun and interesting things to do. Overall it was a fun experience and we all learned a lot about careers, thanks to the people at Horizon and Unloc who organised it.
